We will continue to follow-up on this issue with the Australian Government for tangible long-term solutions. Below is a response/acknowledgement we received a little while back from our local Member of Parliament Hon Dr Andrew Leigh.
Dear Canberra Pakistani Christian Community,
Thank you for writing to me and for sending me your petition and feedback regarding the situation in Pakistan.
Australia supports a Pakistan that is peaceful, prosperous and democratic.
Australia is concerned by reports of discrimination and violence toward religious minorities. We encourage Pakistan to foster religious tolerance and protect the human rights of minorities. The Australian Government continues to call for all parties to uphold democracy and adhere to the rule of law, and to respect and promote human rights for all.
The Australian Government regularly engages with all sides of politics, including through our High Commission in Pakistan. The Australian High Commissioner most recently met senior members of the PTI party in March, and with Mr Khan in May. We regularly raise human rights directly with the Government of Pakistan, including to underscore the importance of freedom of expression and of association, foster tolerance, and strengthen civil society and its institutions. The Australian Government did so most recently in May. We also continue to raise our concerns internationally, including at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The Australian High Commission in Islamabad continues to closely monitor developments in Pakistan, including for any security or consular implications for Australians in Pakistan.
I wish your community well during this difficult time.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew Leigh
