Dear Right-Honourable Kaycee Madu,
Subject: Alberta’s Feral Domestic Rabbits Deserve Legal Protection
Please find attached the subject petition created July 1, 2020. We have gathered more than 5,000 online signatures to protest the injustice of Alberta’s animal protection laws concerning domestic rabbits. There is literally no legislation in existence that respects and protects them. I have copied Calgary’s Mayor and Councillors on this letter, however, I genuinely believe we need to act at the provincial legislative level to permanently effect positive change.
For past decades; in the present; and for the foreseeable future – wherever there are irresponsible human-beings dumping their unsterilized pet-rabbit(s) outdoors – we have seen; are seeing; and will continue to see the establishment of multiple generations of feral domestic rabbit herds. Our communities, parks and social environment are being negatively impacted due to the observable and rampant abuse of these animals.
Please create essential binding legislation that can be upheld effectively, which will:
1) benefit dumped domestic pet-rabbit(s) and domestic rabbit herds;
2) penalize irresponsible Alberta pet-rabbit owners; and
3) fund a comprehensive province-wide domestic rabbit sanctuary program.
Pet-rabbits help many individuals with unique mental health and sensitivity issues cope successfully with their lives. They satisfy the essential human need for care, companionship, and affection. An education campaign needs governmental leadership from you (please read the enclosed Educational Series: Pet Rabbits Need Space and Compassion, Not Cages - ForceChange).
I look forward to your positive and responsible ongoing engagement in this matter.
Yours very truly,
Lynda Wise
