Walter Tull played for both Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town before the leagues were suspended in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I. In 1917, he signed for Rangers, becoming the first black player to join the Ibrox club. Sadly, he would never wear the famous blue. Tull was killed in action at the second Battle of the Somme in 1918.
