Thank you and next steps
Aug 31, 2015 — After posting this update I will be closing this petition . The petition called for transparency and open government in that the matter of the "death stats" so they could be freely discussed in the public arena.
We exerted sufficient pressure on the government to cause them to release the "death stats" and that is what matters.
I leave others to discuss the stats. You can read some of the discussions here:
Many of you have said that we have won a battle but what comes next?
Mike and are teaming up with Gill Thompson, who was featured in one of this petition's updates. She has spent the last 2 years asking questions over the suicide of her brother David Claxton and the use of sanctions.
She also petitioned the government and gained a Select Committee Hearing. The result of this hearing was a called "Beyond the Oakley Report," printed in March 2015
Beyond the Oakley Report contained twenty six recommendations to the current sanction policy.
None of which seem to have been implemented.
We are calling for two of the recommendation to be implemented immediately, these should be speedily followed by the other 24 recommendations.
One of the recommendations of this review is that The DWP commission a broad independent review of benefit conditionality and sanctions.
Our petition will be calling for its immediate implementation and demand that the review is expanded to cover those left without funds during Mandatory Reconsideration.
We will also demanding that the government immediately implement another of The Oakley recommendations to make Hardship Payments available from day one of a sanction period in all cases, including JSA .
Again we are demanding that these payments are also available those left without funds during a Mandatory Reconsideration
No one should be left without funds for the necessities of life especially food and heating
Once again thank you for your support and we sincerely hope that all of you can support our new petition, which can be found at: https://www.change.org/p/rt-hon-david-cameron-mp-implement-the-recommendations-of-the-benefit-sanctions-policy-beyond-the-oakley-review
