Thank you so much for all of your support for Hailey's Legacy.   We are working diligently to keep educating people on what Haileys Legacy is and what it is not.   

Let's talk about this briefly.  

Haileys Legacy is not a red flag law, it's a suicide and violence prevention bill. 

Until there is a more comprehensive way to fundamentally treat the mental health epidemic we are trudging through, we must treat this symptomatically in keeping our loved ones and each other safe in the darkest times.   

Haileys Legacy Bill alerts NICS when someone is put on an emergency mental health hold if a person is considered a danger to themselves or others.  Federal Law 18 U.S.C. § 922(d), states that it is unlawful for any person to sell or otherwise dispose of any firearm or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that such person “has been adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to any mental institution.” However, less than 30% of those brought in on a mental health hold are ever committed, so this federal law will not pertain to them.  Haileys Legacy is looking to update the law to include the emergency involuntary holds.  

Why this is important: People let go from a mental health institution from an emergency hold are 100-300 more likely to complete suicide, even up to the first 30 days following their release. 

Haileys Legacy Bill is aiming at protection on a temporary basis, until the person in question hopefully has time to be stabilized,  to get through their mental health crisis,  and will help protect all of us on a point of sale for firearms basis only.   We will not save everyone with the passing of this bill.   We are not a red flag law,  going into people's homes to take their firearms already in their possession.  This is strictly for point of sale, and again it's temporary.   As a supporter of 2nd Amendment rights,  we do not want to hinder anyone's constitutional right to bear arms.  We do,  however,  want to provide a better layer of protection to our community.   

Keep in mind that this will not affect more than 97% of our community who wishes to purchase a firearm,  as less than 3% of the population is ever put on an emergency hold.   However, when there is a suicide or act of violence, the affect spreads throughout ALL of our community.  

Let's continue to do what's right.  Keep sharing this worthy cause.
