Hello supporters of the Happy Man Tree!

We hope you’re keeping safe and well as we move through the second lockdown. The Friends of the Happy Man Tree are missing having a socially distant cuppa under our beautiful tree! But we’re still visiting it on our daily walks to make sure it’s safe.

As you may have read in our last update, the Happy Man Tree was crowned The Woodland Trust’s England’s Tree of the Year 2020! However, the tree has still been condemned to be cut down by Berkeley Homes and Hackney Council. We are doing everything we can to save the tree, with our focus now on raising funds for our next legal challenge.

Join us for a talk by Paul Wood - ‘London Plane: The Trees that define the City’ on Thursday 19th November at 7.00pm

We are thrilled that Paul Wood, the author of ‘London is a Forest’, ‘London’s Street Trees’ and ‘London Tree Walks’ will be supporting our campaign by giving a talk about these arboreal giants on Thursday 19th November at 7pm.

Paul will discuss many aspects of these fascinating trees, from their origins to their use in cities, their value for wildlife and how they got their name. This promises to be an entertaining and informative session with one of London's leading tree experts. Paul will be in conversation with Gareth Evans, Whitechapel Gallery Film Curator, London Review Bookshop Film Programmer and Hackney resident.

The talk is a fundraiser for the legal challenge to save the Happy Man Tree. Click here to book your ticket!

Donate directly to help support legal costs

We’re almost two thirds of the way to our fundraising target of £3,000 for our legal costs, with just 7 days left to meet it! If you can’t make the event on the 19th but would still like to donate, you can do so here

We know this is a difficult time financially for many people and any support you’re able to give would be hugely appreciated!

Visit our 'Honouring the trees' exhibition

This exhibition on the hoardings behind the Happy Man Tree is honouring the 51 other trees due to be felled during Woodberry Down Phase 3 development.

We have some photos and film online but do visit in person if you can.
