I would like to thank everyone who signed my TRS petition regarding healthcare for retired preMedicare educators. The total signature count is only about 5,000 shy of 100,000. It played a LARGE role in this special session as many senators and house reps brought it up in Austin from what I've been told. This evening, HB 21 passed. It is a small victory. A representative with TRTA reached out to me to congratulate me on leading the largest grassroots educational movement in Texas history. That was overwhelming in the fact I feel a great responsibility to not only the 1 in 20 Texans who pay into TRS but also to our students in public education who deserve a quality education. But after the Senate took 1.5 billion out of the House's original 1.8 billion proposed bill, it only left 212 million which made only a small dent in the premiums. At this point, it has been passed and awaits the Governor's signature. The Senate and some House members do not want to spend anymore time and money on public education, so my next line of educational business lies in educating educators and the general public on the negative affect vouchers will have on public education. I have been to many recent meetings and will also be meeting with House Rep Biedermann Monday afternoon. He reached out to me after seeing my petition and reading the front page article about my movement in the New Braunfels Herald. This fight is not over. Teachers/educators are a sleeping giant who have been awakened. The March Primary will be here before we know it. We need to be strategic in our voting. I am compiling A LOT of information that I will put out here, on my personal FB page, and on my YouTube channel. Almost 100,000 signed a petition in 2 1/2 weeks in support of Texas educators. We must continue the movement until we force our legislature to fix the mess they have made of public education. We definitely have the numbers to get what we want.
