“…We are unable to speak with you in person - so whisper in your ear, be not scared of death my friend there is really nought to fear.

The thing that hurts the most you see, as you pass on through the door – is leaving behind your widow there - the one that you adore...”

Col ‘passed on through the door’ on Sunday November 29th 1987; this is how a colleague - Inspector McGreal - described him in a local newspaper following his death on duty:

“PC Hall was a genuinely popular officer. He was fairly quiet and a really nice bloke.

You knew that he was always there and if a job came up, he'd shout, ‘I'm on my way to that one.'

He was very dependable... a cracking bloke.''

Col would be happy to be remembered in that way by a colleague, but I  of course could add so much more.

He was possessed of a quiet confidence and the ability to remain calm whatever the challenge; Col was my emotional haven - my place of safety.

Seasoned members of the team will know, that at this time each year since the beginning of our campaign, I have deemed this day to be International Colin’s Day; as my guiding light throughout our campaign, and indeed my life – I cannot think of anyone that deserves it more.

I’m not a great one for memorial services – the online International Police Memorial Service had me in pieces from beginning to end; instead I prefer to remember Col with a smile and a cheery wave and it would be smashing if - as in past years - you guys were to join in this small ritual today.
