Thank you so much for signing our petition! We're happy to share some welcome news, and also have a further ask for the government.
The $3.5 million in funding announced Wednesday by the federal government is a victory for abortion access in Canada! It will support people who need help finding a provider and travelling for care, and will also help train new providers. The money was granted to Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights, and National Abortion Federation Canada — two groups that ARCC is proud to work closely with.
But while this infusion of money is a great start, it’s not nearly enough. What’s needed is a meaningful commitment that ensures abortion access is expanded and protected across Canada over the long-term. This funding is for two years only, as it represents part of the government's $45M promise made in 2021 to fund sexual and reproductive health care over three years.
Short-term funding and quick-fix announcements in response to public pressure are not enough to support essential health services like the helplines and abortion funds run by Action Canada and NAF-Canada. The Liberal government must find a way to make this funding permanent, as well as honour the remaining promises they made during last fall's election, as listed in our petition.
