Mauna Kea Education and Awareness

Jul 31, 2026
On Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea and always, we mahalo all who continue to protect Mauna Kea and all sacred spaces. Today, kia`i continue the tradition on Mauna Kea and place the Hae Hawaii at the summit.
Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea commemorates the restoration of Hawaiian sovereignty on July 31, 1843, when the Hawaiian Kingdom was returned to the Hawaiian people after a five-month illegal occupation. It celebrates the enduring principle:
"UA MAU KE EA O KA ʻĀINA I KA PONO."
In 2002, Clarence Kūkauakahi Ching led a huakaʻi along the ancient trails, to raise the Hae Hawaiʻi on Mauna a Wākea marking a significant moment in the modern resurgence of Hawaiian cultural pride and aloha ʻāina.
