Hi Ya'll,
I want to make sure you're getting these updates. If a few of you could dm me on twitter or messenger to let me know you got this one, that would be great.
I want to make a distinction that will be important going forward. This petition isn't towards a person, but a mindset. Georgeo Monbiot is the flagship for a much wider problem of institutional nonsense getting in the way of real change. There are many people with the Monbiot mindset. Seth Itzkan calls him a "Monbiodiot." He's far from alone. Sir David Attenborough has done a lot of good work making documentaries and narrating them as well. He was apart of the production of Prehistoric Planet which is coming out on Apple TV this week and it portrays Dinosaurs more accurately than any other media for mass consumption I've ever seen. He educated millions of us with Planet Earth and Blue Planet. But he too adopts the scarcity mindset. He has advocated for the plant based diet and to my knowledge has done nothing to help us.
I had an exchange with the wonderful Erik Meeijaard, who has written many scathing pieces about the greenwashing of the Batang Toru Dam. He said there's no way cows can be the answer. Are you sure about that Erik? We have sixty years of evidence. The science is clear and readily available. What made this exchange particularly irritating was the fact that he had nothing but prejudice. He didn't cite a study or make his case. He basically said "I don't like cows, sorry I'm not going to man up and do what is right."
In the real world we either grow up or die. And grownups change their views in the face of new evidence. But what's scary is how people with this mindset can levy that accusation against us with flawed studies done by the most prestigious universities. This is Orwellian. If a think tank did this they would be called out for it and it would be obvious. But educated people can wreak more havoc than uneducated people because they control the production of knowledge and can make data tell any story they want.
One thing I want help with and that I would encourage some on my audience to help me with is perhaps to get the Upsala Paper, Nordborg and Roos (2016), that smeared Savory retracted. It's really hard to do and I would appreciate anyone's help in doing this. If you work in a University that would be helpful.
