Letter to President Trump and US Congress

Re: The US-China trade dispute

Dear President Trump, Ladies and Gentlemen of the US Congress,

We, the undersigned Vietnamese and friends, would like to support you, President Trump, members of Congress and the people of the United States, in your ongoing actions relating to the trade between the United States and China.

We strongly appreciate the courage of the United States people. We understand that a higher tariff on Chinese products may not make your life easier in the short term. We believe however that your endurance and sacrifice will be well worth it in the long run.

For many years the Chinese government, with its state capitalist approach, has unfairly taken millions of jobs from American citizens. Their tactics can be summarized as follows: forced technology transfers, intellectual property theft, cyber intrusions into business networks, currency manipulation, high tariff and non-tariff barriers, and unfair subsidies to state-owned enterprises.

This approach by China is certainly not good for the United States, neither is it good for world sustainability and prosperity, or the common Chinese.

The Chinese still live under a totalitarian state whose human rights record is one of the worst. Chinese people with their rich culture and long history deserve better leadership.

However, the actual Chinese regime is dominated by a minority of leaders who exert total control of the people. China spies on its own people and the world with advanced information technology, due to this insatiable need to control everything.

China’s way is not for cooperation, but control and domination, particularly regarding their neighbours. By imposing its illegal 9-dash-line claim, China threatens freedom of navigation, challenges the presence in the Southeast Asia Sea of the world community - including the United States - and causes increasing regional and global tensions.

In relation to this we would like to thank the United States for the freedom of navigation operations carried out in recent years. We would welcome a greater presence of the United States and its allies in the Southeast Asia Sea.

We believe that these moves, by President Trump and the United States Congress to stop China’s expansionism and to re-balance trade between the United States and China, are correct, courageous and honourable.

We, industrious and peaceful Vietnamese and friends, appeal for world peace, stability and justice, where nations trade fairly and co-exist in peace. We believe that both Americans and Vietnamese share this noble cause.
