We Are Taking Your Signatures to Japan’s National Diet

To everyone who has supported #FromOkinawa,

Thanks to your support, our petition has now received more than 1,000 signatures. We are deeply grateful to each of you.

We are pleased to share that an urgent gathering will take place at Japan’s National Diet on October 26. Around six of us from Okinawa, together with others joining us, will travel to Tokyo to deliver your signatures and the hopes behind them.

Our heartfelt thanks go to everyone who has signed, shared our message, and helped coordinate and support this gathering at such short notice.

This began with a simple wish: that every person’s life and dignity be protected, and that everyone be able to live in safety. With your support, a small voice is gradually growing stronger.

We have also received support from Okinawa Prefectural Women’s Wings and Femi-Bridge Okinawa. As we respect one another’s experiences and perspectives, we believe this circle of solidarity will continue to grow.

■ About the Gathering

On October 26, 2026, the Okinawa Future Coexistence Initiative will hold an urgent gathering at the National Diet Members’ Office Building and present our “Declaration to Protect Life and Dignity.”

The declaration calls on the Japanese and U.S. governments to prevent crimes involving U.S. military personnel and clearly establish the responsibilities of military organizations and commanders. It seeks concrete institutional improvements, including revisions to Articles XVI and XVII of the Japan–U.S. Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).

■ The Declaration’s “Seven Wishes”

Explicitly establish the responsibilities of military organizations and commanders for crime prevention and supervision under Article XVI.
Require the transfer of suspects in serious crimes to Japanese custody, including before indictment, under Article XVII.
Make cooperation with investigations mandatory, including providing evidence and allowing crime-scene examinations on military bases.
Establish independent review by a third-party body separate from the military.
Provide sustained support for victims and bereaved families.
Publicly disclose disciplinary outcomes and establish measures to prevent recurrence, including screening for re-entry into Japan.
Create mechanisms for local communities to participate in reviewing and improving these measures.
As residents of Okinawa, entrusted with your hopes, we will convey these seven wishes with care and determination.

■ Event Details

Date: Monday, October 26, 2026
Time: 12:00–13:30 (Japan Standard Time)
