Dear Supporters,

As we continue our fight for Byron Greene’s release, it is crucial to understand the layers of harm caused by his mandatory minimum sentence. Byron, sentenced to 50 years for a crime he did not commit, remains trapped in a cycle of punishment that stretches far beyond his time behind bars. Here’s why the current system is failing him — and his family:

1. The Burden of a Mandatory Minimum Sentence

Byron’s mandatory minimum sentence means that he is legally forced to serve a minimum of 25 years, regardless of his rehabilitation or good behavior. While the justice system may have tried to guarantee consistency in sentencing, what it fails to account for is the humanity of the incarcerated.

A judge should have the ability to consider Byron’s personal growth, his contribution to the community, and his potential for redemption. Unfortunately, with a mandatory minimum sentence, none of these factors are considered — and Byron is denied a fair opportunity for early parole.

2. The Impact on Parole Eligibility

The very nature of Byron’s mandatory minimum limits his ability to appear before the parole board. However, they did give him some semblance of a hearing and afterwards stated that his mandatory minimum sentence would not allow him to be paroled. I’m not sure why they did not know that before the Hearing. SMH. Despite demonstrating significant growth and transformation behind bars, the parole board has no option but to adhere strictly to his sentence, regardless of his rehabilitation progress.

This leaves Byron in an endless cycle of imprisonment with little hope for parole — a system that punishes him not only for the crime he did not commit, but also for the system's inability to allow for fairness and flexibility in the judicial process.

3. Mental and Physical Health Impact

The toll that incarceration has taken on Byron’s mental health cannot be understated. The lack of adequate mental and physical health care, coupled with the trauma of being behind bars for decades, places an immense burden on his emotional well-being. Though he is a strong individual, consistent exposure to solitary confinement and excessive lockdowns can lead anyone to increased anxiety, depression, and fear for their future.

4. The Impact on Family

For Byron’s family, the consequences of his mandatory minimum sentence are devastating. His mother, brother, sons and extended family are left to navigate a broken system that continuously denies them the chance to see him restored. We watch him age without the comfort of freedom, we watch him lose out on opportunities for growth, and we endure the mental strain of wondering when he will finally be able to come home.

Our family feels every moment of his absence, and with each year, it becomes more and more difficult to hold on to hope, yet our faith sustains us. Byron’s unjust sentence has created a generational trauma that affects his children, his mother, his brother and his entire community.

5. The Call for Change

Byron’s case is not just about one person — it’s about all those who are trapped by the weight of mandatory minimum sentences, unable to be evaluated for their growth, rehabilitation, or readiness for reintegration into society.

We call on all advocates, legislators, and supporters of justice to join us in our fight for Byron’s freedom. We need you to support the amendment of mandatory minimum laws that have perpetuated injustice and broken families.

Byron deserves to be heard. His family deserves to be healed. And we all deserve a justice system that acknowledges the humanity of every individual.
