Good news out of CDO this week.
The College of Dietitians of Ontario has announced it is actively advancing proposals to expand the scope of practice for RDs — and strengthen title protection for the "nutritionist" title in Ontario.
The proposals on the table:
✅ Independent lab ordering for nutrition-related tests
✅ Prescribing and dispensing nutrition-related drugs
✅ Formalizing RD authority to prescribe and apply CGM devices
✅ Protected "nutritionist" title — consistent with other provinces
This matters. These are practical, system-level solutions to real pressures — primary care gaps, delayed treatment, underutilized clinical expertise, inequitable access in rural and remote communities.
And it reflects what RDs across Ontario have been saying: we are qualified, right now, to do more.
Scope expansion is one piece of a larger picture. The profession also needs investment in workforce sustainability and fair compensation — because you can't ask RDs to carry more system responsibility without addressing the conditions that are already driving early-career attrition and pushing experienced clinicians out.
That's the work we are bringing with this petition & hopefully Queen's Park this fall.
In the meantime — if you're an RD, engage with CDO's upcoming surveys. Your practice experience is evidence, and they're asking for it.
Progress looks like this. Let's keep going. 💚
