Recurring Horrific Suicides - the sign of lack of credible mechanism to tackle it!!

(Nov, 2019) Mr. Dominc Quman Jansen, a 4th-year student at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna committed suicide in his hostel room by hanging.

It is said that he was stressed and depressed as he was not allowed to sit for the Part 2 Exam (4th-year exam) due to less attendance for the community medicine subject.

He also was on treatment for depression and it was said that due to this very reason he missed some of the classes in Community Medicine.

Failing to find and rectify the system errors is the sole reason for these recurring horrific suicides. We might have prevented the death of Mr. Quman in 2019 if we had been taken credible action to curtail Academic Stress and poor student-supportive-measures, at least following the suicide of Mr. Samuel in 2018.

Hence we urge to have Comprehensive formal inquiries into such Suicides of University students, in order to prevent further tragedies.
