Just now, President Benson just released an email addressing the campus community (after some friendly reminders from students on twitter) about the Trump rally. We had hoped for clarity of information regarding closures, protest areas, regulations, safety measures-- Actual, practical information. We were given a vague promise of "physical safety" and an 'inspiring' quote.
Nowhere in that email was a stand against hate speech, or a clear declaration that EKU DOES NOT endorse or support the Trump Campaign. There is NOTHING in that email that shows that harassment will be taken seriously.
We are not looking to be "shielded from ideologies we don't like". Trust me, none of us are shielded from ANY of this at ANY point. We're looking to ensure that our safety will be taken seriously, and that hate speech and harassment BETWEEN CAMPUS STUDENTS will be taken seriously. We are not confused about the difference between friendly debate and derogatory, hateful language, but we certainly think you are.
