First of all: Huge thanks to anyone who's signed or shared this petition. I don't know what the result will be, but I do know it's clear that many, many Ontarians are furious and taking action, and that can't hurt our case.

I've had a number of questions regarding what else people can do to support our libraries, so here are some ideas:

  • I've removed the link to the petition that was here on request. However, the NDP contacted me today to ask if they could use a draft of a paper petition I had run by them as the basis of their own official petition they will put forward in the Legislature. As soon as they send their finished version to me, I will post it here.
  • I've written a draft letter you can send your MPP. It has a section where you can detail how the cuts impact your own life, and you'll need to fill in your own information as well as that of your MPP. Please save it to your own desktop or online drive before editing, it'll make it easier for everyone sharing:

  • Get silly! Every time you want an interlibrary loan item, phone your MPP and/or Michael Tibollo and ask them to get it for you. Let them know that you're certain they believe in your rights to intellectual freedom and access to information, so you know they'll help. This worked for Saskatchewan; maybe it will work for us? And at least we'll have some fun.
  • For other library workers, if you're able and inclined, every time we have to tell someone we can't get something for them, phone your MPP and/or Michael Tibollo and let them know the circumstances and impact. It goes without saying that we'll keep details light so everyone stays anonymous.
  • Write a letter to the editor of your paper of choice.
  • If your local media isn't covering this, write to the public editor of the organization (if they have one), editor in chief or managing editor to ask why.

Thanks so much for fighting the good fight for libraries; your local library workers are are so grateful.
