Not related to Congressional action, but I have seen a ton of worry about this from fellow pro-wolf advocates so I figured that I should address it. As you are probably aware of by now, the USFWS has proposed to delist the Gray Wolf nationwide. A link to the proposed rule is provided with this update.

To emphasize, this petition is specifically opposed to the political delisting of the Gray Wolf; this petition is neutral towards delisting in and of itself, since biologists debate whether the species is still in need of ESA protections or is recovered enough to be delisted. Thus, this petition will have no impact on the proposed rule.

That said, a nationwide delisting of the Gray Wolf will stop the USFWS from pursuing further recovery of the species. While some states might promote additional conservation, others may not and could even work to prevent restoration.

Therefore, I highly encourage you to submit a comment on the proposed rule. Keep in mind that the USFWS is specifically seeking additional scientific input rather than emotional opinions on whether the Gray Wolf should be protected or not. So to make your comment most effective, focus on the scientific reasons for why the species should not be delisted at this time and provide citations from credible sources.
