Steve Bell is one of our most creative cartoonists. His satirical swipe at authority is an intrinsic part of our wonderful cartoon tradition in the UK. All too often people are worried not to speak out, speak their minds, or express themselves in fear of retribution. 

Satire is a cultural weapon in which to beat those in powerful positions. It's a tool of ordinary people. 

The fact that the Guardian took this heavyhanded and disproportionate decision to end Steve's contract is deeply concerning. 

As I told my students, 'you may find my choice of fashion offensive, but surely you would defend my right to wear it'.
