🗣 Today, 30 August, is the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.

Today, remember the name Bilal Abdul Kareem.

Bilal is an African American journalist who has reported from Syria for more than a decade. On 22 December 2025, he was detained by Syrian security forces.

251 days later, he remains in detention.

📍No formal charge.

📍No trial.

📍No access to a lawyer.

If the Syrian authorities believe Bilal Abdul Kareem has committed a crime, then charge him, give him access to legal counsel, and bring him before a fair and transparent court. If they cannot do that, they must release him.

Human rights are not conditional on whether we agree with someone's politics, journalism or opinions.

Due process is a right.

On this International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, we are reminded of the importance of ensuring that no person is deprived of their liberty without due process and the protection of the law.

For 251 days, Bilal has been deprived of his liberty without formal charge or trial.
