The following is a message from our friends at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. They too are fighting for sunlight and also the very survival of their gardens.

Dear Friends of the Fight for Sunlight,
The application for rezoning the seven lots at 960 Franklin Avenue will likely be certified on November 16 during the City Planning Commission’s review session.
At that point, the project will enter the formal Uniform Land Use Review Process (ULURP), a lengthy, multistep process that includes several opportunities for the public to weigh in on the applicant’s plans.
In the lead-up to that critical juncture, we’re asking all our supporters to send emails or letters to Community Board 9 and also to Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams’ office.
Your message should be short and to the point, and should include the subject, your rationale, and your name and address.
Here are some talking points for your convenience:
Subject: 960 Franklin Avenue Rezoning
I am writing to state my opposition to the proposed rezoning of 960 Franklin Avenue.
As a (lifelong resident of Brooklyn/lover of Brooklyn Botanic Garden/educator/frequent visitor), I believe that the zoning put in place in 1991, specifically to protect the Garden’s conservatory from shadows, should remain. Here’s why:
- The proposed development would block sunlight to Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s conservatory complex, and would compromise the Garden’s collections, including endangered orchids and hundreds-year-old bonsais.
- Reducing sunlight to the conservatory complex threatens the entirety of the collection because plants for every part of the Garden are propagated and grown there.
- This damage to the Garden would limit BBG’s ability to provide year-round free STEM education to Brooklyn’s youth (more than 200,000 of whom visit each year).
