Dear Amazing and ever patient supporters, on this International Women’s Day we, the team behind No More Page 3 want to introduce to you our next bit…THE SEXIST NEWS!!! It has been more than a year since the dinosaurs over at The Sun HQ finally saw sense and (despite suggestions otherwise) dropped their topless Page 3 feature from the printed copy of the UK's best selling newspaper. After almost two and a half years of flat out campaigning, we were obviously over the moon, but also, as it turned out, we were really quite worn out. So we took a long break….well….we sort of took a break. Actually some of us never really went anywhere. A small splinter cell from NMP3 HQ began the blog ‘My Tights Won’t Stay Up’* to discuss stuff other than Rupert Murdoch’s obsession with boobs, but they couldn’t help themselves, they were drawn back time and again to how ridiculously the British Press treats women. So Iris Clot, Flora Cramp and Joan Fun began The Week in Sexist News to mock the absolute mind-sewage that is published day-in day-out. They took a hiatus at the end of last year so we could begin planning this merge of feminist forces. *You can find My Tights Won't Stay Up here http://mytightswontstayup.com/ Page 3 may be gone but the sexism in our press goes on and on and on and on…………. Women are presented still as stereotypes and sexual entertainment, from “nip slips” to “boob offs”, 50% of the population are ridiculed, belittled and largely ignored. Our achievements in politics, business, sport, art and well…..all the other amazing stuff we do, reduced to a foot note and a titillating image among multiple images and coverage of active and achieving men. In short, there is still a lot to do and that our lovely friends, is where we all come in. We plan to continue the work we began in asking for equal representation in our news media by relentlessly drawing attention to the sublime, the ridiculous and the sometimes downright dangerous.
