.@David_Cameron Change the law to better protect vulnerable children like Daniel Pelka #DanielsLaw
Daniel would have been seven years-old today #DanielsLaw
Jul 15, 2014 — There have been a number of exceptionally significant developments for our campaign in recent weeks. I write to let you know about these important developments, and to ask you to remember Daniel Pelka on his birthday – had Daniel lived, he would have been seven years old today.
Child abuse allegations linked to senior political figures continue to dominate the headlines and the campaign for Daniel’s Law (the mandatory reporting of child abuse in regulated settings) is back on the agenda.
Children’s charity the NSPCC made a dramatic U-turn last week and declared its support for mandatory reporting in boarding schools, care homes and hospitals (although this is a welcome development, current proposals do not go nearly far enough); David Cameron indicated in Prime Minister’s Questions that it ‘may be time’ for such a law to be introduced; and a Home Office inquiry was launched into widespread historic child abuse in regulated settings which could enforce it.
Lib Dem Peer Baroness Walmsley called for a debate of her proposed amendment to the Serious Crime Bill in the House of Lords today, specifically the introduction of mandatory reporting of child abuse in regulated settings; Labour backs the call, so what will government do?
Petition signatures have continued to increase as media and public attention becomes focused once again on this critical hole in the law; together with the Mandate now coalition of charities, we now stand at more than 167,000 signatures.
Please do all you can to promote and share the campaign for Daniel’s Law - www.change.org/DanielsLaw
It’s time for change and I believe we can make this happen.
