Pet-food claims challenged in Parliament. Now we need your help.

If a company makes health claims about the food or supplements you give your pet, shouldn't you be able to see the evidence?
That’s precisely the question we’re asking ahead of next Thursday’s first National Pet Food Standards Day, an initiative established by Pets Magazine to encourage greater scrutiny of the pet food industry.
And the timing couldn't be more relevant.
In two written answers published on 27 October, the Government addressed concerns raised in Parliament about misleading pet-food and supplement advertising, reaffirming that objective advertising claims must be substantiated, health-benefit claims require robust clinical evidence, and misleading online advertising is covered by consumer protection legislation.
But there's a crucial distinction: having the evidence isn't the same as sharing it.
Companies may be required to hold evidence supporting their claims, but pet owners do not have a general right to inspect the underlying research.
That's one of the issues our Pet Food Standards Charter is challenging, alongside calls for greater ingredient scrutiny, clearer labelling, transparent safety testing and better monitoring of suspected food-related illness.
And now we have an important milestone approaching.
Thursday 12 November marks the first National Pet Food Standards Day, founded by Pets Magazine to focus attention on the safety, transparency and standards governing the food we give our dogs and cats.
