Save Cantonese Classes at CCSF

Das Problem

CCSF is one of the few community colleges that offer Cantonese language classes in the Bay Area.

We respectfully petition the Foreign Language Department of CCSF to provide a variety of Cantonese classes to support the San Francisco community's cultural and professional needs. As one of the few colleges in the Bay Area that offers Cantonese, its elimination would be tantamount to linguistics extinction.

-

Conversational Cantonese (Chinese 10A + 10B) is beneficial for students who:

1) are heritage speakers seeking to develop more proficiency and fluency in their home language

2) wish to strengthen cultural and family connections

3) are professionals working with a Cantonese-speaking clientele

4) wish to develop international business relationships

5) patronize Chinese businesses in San Francisco and / or have plans to travel to Asia

Facts about Cantonese:

  • It is the dominant language in San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles and New York Chinatowns
  • It is spoken by 55 million people in China
  • It is the dominant language in Hong Kong and Macau
  • Is spoken by 20 million world-wide, with 1 million speakers in Vietnam
  • Is part of the cultural identity of a majority of Asian students at CCSF and San Francisco
