Swimming lessons are not yet proven to be an effective preventive measure for children under 3 years of age. It is difficult to replicate the adverse conditions in which an immersion incident generally takes place, for example, an unexpected immersion while fully clothed. In one study, 10% of deceased children had been able to swim at least 10 metres. In such cases, parents may become complacent and relax their supervision.
