City workers (the Câmara’s) are luring pigeons by dropping food on the floor and spraying them with a gas that renders them motionless and then netting them, taking them away and killing them.
Pigeons are sentient and intelligent and don’t carry any more diseases than any other birds, animals or, indeed, humans! Such cruel, inhumane treatment is not acceptable in the capital of a civilized country.
Lethal control of pigeons has been scientifically proved not to work and often actually results in an increase in numbers!
A more humane, efficient and ethical alternative must be used instead, such as dovecotes, like in many other European capitals. This will result in a more pigeon and people friendly city.
Whilst these gentle, friendly animals are being killed, as someone who cares for the welfare of birds I’ll be keeping Lisbon out of my list of travel destinations.
