How do you feel when someone suddenly come and pull your teeth to death while you’re at home chilling? That’s what happened to Yongki, a Sumatran elephant. It’s found dead with his tongue turned blue and forcibly removed tusks. There are big wounds from his left and right cheeks to his jaws. A heartless murderer has taken his tusks with a forced manner.

Yongki was a 35-years-old male trained elephant who had done a lot of great things in his life. He was a part of trained elephant-elephant handler team who served their duties in South Bukit Barisan National Park, Lampung, Indonesia. This team serves noble duties to monitor and to keep wild elephants away from plantation and residence area.

The loss of habitat has caused Sumatran elephants to lose their home, and frequently get them in touch with local people. Yongki was able to courageously drive the wild elephants back to the jungle. Thanks to his hard work, the number of damage and victims that caused by conflict between elephants and human can be minimized.

I am Wisnu Wardana, a veterinarian. I often do autopsy on dead elephants. Some of them were poisoned or killed for their tusks. The Autopsy is needed to know the cause of the death of these protected rare animals.

Last week I was extremely shocked, and until now, I am still very upset about Yongki’s death. Having tusks is supposed to be a blessing, but it is not for Yongki. He was killed because of his tusks.

I was even more shocked when I knew that elephant tusks-made products are illegally sold in some online shops. The pictures on this petition are the examples. There are supposed to be strict rules about this.

As smart consumers and people who care about protected endangered species, through this petition, we tell these online shops like Lazada.co.id, bukalapak.com and Tokopedia.com to add written policy to ban people from selling products made from protected animals, including elephant’s tusks. And also to make sure the products sold on those online shops don’t contain or not made from illegal materials.

According to UU No. 5 Th. 1990, selling or distributing parts of protected animals is a crime which can be punished 5 years sentence and US$ 6,800 fine.

And based on the basic rules of economy, if there is no supply, then the demand won’t be fulfilled. Elephant is one of God’s creatures, and all God’s creatures are supposed to protect each other.

Support this petition! So there will be no more elephants killed in such cruel way. Let’s hope there’s no other Yongki killed for his Tusks.
