Legacy and taxes
Interested in there being a real legacy from Bris 32 and the proper use of your taxes?
Well, let’s have a look at the ongoing usage of the proposed Fitzroy course. We’ll use a simple analysis of the legacy use of that course and compare it against a viable SEQ option (like the Moreton Bay/Lawnton Lakes Course).
Rockhampton
Approx State / Fed funds: $400-500m
Likely Comp unique users: 200 people
Likely Rec unique users: 1,000 people
Likely yearly Regattas/events: 5
Funds/Comp unique user (say): $2.0-2.5M per user
Funds/Comp & Rec user (say): $333 - $416k per user
Moreton Bay/Lawnton
Approx State / Fed funds: $150-200m
Likely Comp unique users: 9,500* people
Likely Rec unique users: 30,000^ people
Likely yearly Regattas/events: 40
Funds/Comp unique user (say): $15-20k per user
Funds/Comp & Rec user (say): $3.8-5k per user
*Annual comp users: Moreton will be used by rowers, canoe/kayak, dragon boats/triathlon competitions. CompareFitzroy which can’t be used for triathlon swimming because of crocodile presence.
^Annual recreational users: Incl spectators. Moreton involves the development of a sand beach for families, recreational kayaking and large community events occurring on the developed island. We will include this analysis into our comprehensive support statement (with sources) in coming weeks.
You don’t have to be an economist to realise that NOT having Olympic and Paralympic rowing/canoe on the Fitzroy is a ‘No Brainer’! We are all about supporting regions like Rocky BUT holding those events there is just not the right method, the right sports or the right use of taxpayer funds for supporting a region like Rocky.
