We’ve hit an incredible milestone – 1,000 signatures and counting! Thank you so much for signing our petition regarding the proposed 18-storey skyscraper at 1631 Queen Street East. The petition surpassed 1,000 signatures and we need to keep the momentum going!

You probably know that in 2012, the City and area residents worked together to create the Beach Urban Design Guidelines (UDGs). This was undertaken because of concerns that developers wanted to dramatically change the character of the neighbourhood by putting up large condo projects. The compromise that was struck allowed for growth to 6-storeys, which has served us well, as all private projects since then have conformed to the rules. The result has been more housing, but on a human scale.

You may have seen the recent response from Councillor Bradford. His “fact sheet” conveniently omits the height of the building. Instead, he threatened legal action against his residents for providing the facts about the UDGs. Bradford continues to mislead residents, telling them that this proposal meets the UDGs! The City owns the property at 1631 Queen Street. They could easily build a 6-storey building just like the one directly across the street at 1630 Queen. That developer conformed to the rules, including the parking requirements. We believe all 279 units should be affordable, remain in the public realm, and that they should be built in a 6-storey format. We are for 100% affordable housing!

If we don't stop this now, there will be no turning back and we will be defenseless against the developers and their well-healed lawyers and political enablers; this will affect all of Queen St. from Coxwell to Neville Park!
