Manchester’s “major incident” is another example of the growing risk of infection seen on the rise over the last few weeks. With reports of new outbreaks linked to the opening of pubs and restaurants and other local lockdowns being enforced, it is clear that the government still isn’t prepared to properly handle the pandemic.
Despite the very real risk, the Prime Minister has announced plans to further relax restrictions towards the end of the year and proposes ending social distancing in November, right when the second wave is predicted to hit the country.
Instead of confronting the 66,000 excess deaths and very real failures of his cabinet the Prime Minister has boasted about his government’s great successes. Though he claims he is too busy fighting the pandemic to meet with the bereaved families, he has found time to play with diggers, meet with cycling clubs and take questions from school children. The virus, it seems, simply isn’t important to our country’s leadership.
Clearly the need to establish the facts is crucial at this stage. It is of the utmost importance that we seek to learn the lessons of the past before it is too late.
Help get the urgent inquiry the country needs and our loved ones deserve
www.crowdfunder.co.uk/covidinquirynow
We have launched a Crowdfunder to force the Government into an urgent independent and judge led inquiry.
The funds will cover legal costs and protect families in the event that we are unsuccessful in the courts.
None of our members are in a position to take this case on their own and are unable to risk being personally pursued for costs should the case be unsuccessful. We will only be able to go forward with our legal challenge if we are able to secure enough funds so we’d be hugely grateful if you are able to contribute and would like to express our thanks to those who already have:
Any excess raised will be put towards getting professional support for our campaign, setting ourselves up as an organisation and other campaigning costs – this will also be how funds are used if for any reason we are unable to go forward with the legal challenge. Our lawyers and other supporters are all currently working pro-bono on this case.
Why we are initiating legal action
A public inquiry will seek to establish the facts around the pandemic so far. This means exposing what decisions were made, why and the impact of those decisions. With the facts in place, policies can be made to improve our ability to react to the virus as it continues to spread and to prepare us for any future waves.
Though the Prime Minister has committed to an inquiry, the form that it would take is largely unknown. We need an independent statutory public inquiry because it would be unbiased but most importantly we need it to happen immediately so that we can better protect people right now. An inquiry in review will simply be too late for the people who die in the interim.
It needs to be said that we do not want to go to judicial review and if the government were to do the right thing we wouldn’t need to. It remains, however, that the decisions that the government continue to make, clearly do not “follow the science” and that they have learned nothing from the last seven months. We need to take action now before it is too late.
