Dublin politician Clare Daly TD has called for an urgent investigation into "horrific revelations that three dogs broke into a hare coursing compound [in Rathdowney] and mauled and butchered about 78 hares, with the dogs being put down." Speaking in the Dail today, Deputy Daly (Independents4Change, Dublin Fingal) reminded Minister Heather Humphreys and Minister of State Michael Ring that the hare is "protected" and that coursing is undermining the species. "This is an industry out of control," she said. "It is derogatory to call it a sport. It is barbarous." "The Rathdowney coursing meeting was scheduled to take place in December but shockingly it has been rescheduled for January," she added. "How in God's name could a coursing club that allowed something like that to happen be given a licence to carry on that activity?" The Irish Council Against Blood Sports is absolutely horrified at the revelation in the Dail that 78 hares were killed.
