There are MANY in Australia who never think about Human Rights - who just assume that as Australian Citizens our Government will PROTECT us from Human Rights abuses.
We happily watch 'reality' TV shows to forget about the cares of the day - but TRUE REALITY is happening all around us which we choose to ignore - our LACK of Human Rights PROTECTION!
Such as what happens TO US - if it's our GOVERNMENT who ABUSES us?
The situation of Witness K being TRIED by OUR Government in SECRET shows that we are NOT protected by our Constitution.
Whether or not you AGREE with what he did is NOT the point!
The fact is he did what he THOUGHT was RIGHT - he tried to be an honourable Australian standing up for what he saw was an ABUSE by the Australian Government of the RIGHTS of the PEOPLE of a nation that Australian SAID it supported. To AID Australian and Multinational CORPORATIONS to unjustly PROFIT from a resource that BELONGS to the Timorese PEOPLE..
WHY would an Australian Government even do this?
As Australians we should actually consider this BEFORE we elect Politicians into powerful positions: Does this person have INTEGRITY? Are they ETHICAL in their dealings with others? Do they have TIES with CORPORATIONS which would mean they care about THEM rather than US?
As American Political Scientist Michael Parenti said
"The enormous gap between what US leaders do in the world and what Americans think their leaders are doing is one of the great propaganda accomplishments."
I've no doubt this is TRUE of Australia Leaders as Witness K has highlighted.
HOW could an Australian Government even think it is RIGHT to prosecute a Citizen in SECRET merely to PROTECT themselves and FORMER Politicians FROM scrutiny?
Politicians pay 'lip service' to Human Rights but if Australian MAJOR political parties CARED would we be the ONLY western democracy without a Bill, Charter or Human Rights Act?
The last Governments who were SINCERE about protecting our Human Rights were the Labor Governments of Whitlam & Hawke.. Think about THAT - the latter half of LAST Century!
