Hello,
Thank you for an amazing showing of support through this petition and the School Board meeting yesterday! There was an overwhelming amount of support for OCSCS, the teachers, and Dr. Fisher. This sent a clear message to the board, and particularly to Marilyn Anderson and Carrie Buck. It shows that parents of OCSCS students and the community are paying attention to what happens to this school.
In the meeting, both Marilyn Anderson and Carrie Buck expressed their support for OCSCS and that they want the campus to succeed. While that is great, it is received with a great amount of skepticism. Their actions up to and including last night have painted a very different picture. While the creation of the charter was a unanimous decision, Marilyn Anderson and Carrie Buck have not shown that they truly do support the charter and its goals.
- In March 2024, Marilyn Anderson voted against the use of Singapore Math at OCSCS. Her thoughts were that it was too difficult for students; in reality this type of math is taught at private schools with an incredible amount of success. This stifles the purpose of a charter school where they can buck failing programs like Common Core and use more proven methods that allow all kids to flourish regardless of their starting point.
- In May 2024, Marilyn Anderson and Carrie Buck voted against the use of Garner Holt and the creation of the Innovation Lab. This lab is the heart of the campus and one of the key things that distinguishes this school from other public schools in the district. Why would Marilyn Anderson and Carrie Buck try to stifle this innovation if not to keep OCSCS behaving as a traditional district school?
- In June 2024, Marilyn Anderson and Carrie Buck again voted against Garner Holt and the Innovation Lab.
- In December 2024, Marilyn Anderson led the charge to bring in new legal council with Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud and Romo when they already had an established law firm providing guidance. This was so they could specifically bring in Sukhi "the charter slayer" in for the purpose of evaluating the charter amendment. If Marilyn Anderson and Carrie Buck truly do support the charter, why would they be so insistent to have a “charter slayer” be the person to evaluate the charter amendment?
- In December 2025, Dr. Fisher made a request to the board and Acting Superintendent Gray to fund a $5,000 retainer for independent legal counsel to advise on the charter amendment. This was ignored.
- In January 2025, Dr. Fisher made a request to be present during closed session during the discussion about the proposed amendment and discussion about OCSCS. This request was ignored or denied. Instead, this is the email that triggered the response from Acting Superintendent Gray stating that they were trying to make “a common enemy” of charter schools before the OCSCS discussion.
- In the January 2025 board meeting (last night), the ordering and process of presenting the proposed charter amendment again point to Marilyn Anderson and Carrie Buck having ulterior motives. The session started with 10 minutes allocated to Dr. Beth Fisher to provide her case for the approval of the amendment. This was followed by Sukhi “the charter slayer” providing her assessment of the amendment with no time limit. Dr. Fisher was not provided any additional time to clarify any component of the amendment during the board question phase to Sukhi “the charter slayer.” During the meeting, Dr. Fisher made multiple requests to clarify discussion items and answer questions. If Marilyn Anderson truly wanted a collaborative environment that supported the charter, then why would they not want Dr. Fisher to speak? Rather, Marilyn Andrson shut Dr. Fishers requests down multiple times and prohibited her from speaking despite Leandra Blades requesting that Dr. Fisher be allowed to provide feedback. What are they trying to hide?
While we are grateful for the words of support from Marilyn Anderson and Carrie Buck, their actions speak a very different story. Now is not the time to sit back and stop paying attention, it is the time to make sure the board knows that our parents care about OCSCS and that we are informed voters. Please keep watch of the board meetings and agendas to stay involved and show support for OCSCS!
