(FROM OCEANA IN MY INBOX THIS MORNING)

Dear Nicole:
I have some good news– Amazon released its sustainability report yesterday and in this the company reported a 11.6% decline in its use of plastic packaging throughout its global operations network in one year (from 2021 to 2022)! Not only this, but the company also communicated a commitment to phase out all padded bags containing plastic (including their ubiquitous blue and white plastic mailer). This is the first major commitment that the company has announced which will significantly reduce their use of plastic globally – and so this will reduce plastic packaging waste in all of your countries. In the past few years (and since Oceana has started our campaign targeting Amazon), the company has moved away from plastic packaging in other major markets including India, Australia, Japan, and throughout Europe. This recent announcement (yesterday) is the tipping point that makes us confident that the company is on a trajectory to significantly reduce plastic packaging globally going forward (plastic pouches and bags represent over 30% of global e-commerce packaging).

A few minutes ago we put out a press release on this, after sending this to the company late last night (and receiving a confirmation of receip).

I wanted to let you know asap – this would have not happened w/o your help and work!
