Two American hostages released by Hamas.
For the first time since the outbreak of war between Hamas and Israel, the Palestinian militant movement has released two hostages.  It concerns two Americans from Chicago, a woman and her daughter.  Hamas reported the news earlier in the evening, saying they were releasing the two for humanitarian reasons.  The Israeli government confirmed their release a few hours later.
The two have been handed over to the International Red Cross.  They were then handed over to the Israeli army at the border with Israel.  They are currently en route to a military base in Israel.  There they are reunited with family members.  Mediation by Qatar The release from the Gaza Strip is said to have come about after mediation by Qatar.  That country says that the release is the result of continuous communication with all parties.  Qatar hopes dialogue will lead to "the release of all hostages of all nationalities."
