Hi there, thanks to your support, the media has finally reported about the difficulties faced by people who identify as non-binary, at airports. Two airline companies have now started working on adding a non-binary Title 'Mx.' to their booking systems. As soon as they have made this change, I will share an update with you.

Since July 14th is recognised as International Non-Binary People's Day, I want to share with you information about the non-binary gender identity.

Before that, let's understand what gender identity is. Your gender identity is your internal sense of your gender. This sense could be same as your biological sex or it could be different than your biological sex. If you are born as female and you identify yourself as a woman, then your gender identity is cisgender - same with people who are born as male and identify as men. However, if gender identity does not match with your biological sex, then your gender identity is transgender.

What Is the Gender Binary? The gender binary is the problematic notion that there are only two genders, and all individuals are either male or female, but this is false. There is wide range of gender identities. Cultures around the world have recognised genders other than male and female throughout history.

Types of Non-Binary Gender
Non-binary is both a gender identity and a catch-all term to describe gender identities other than strictly male or female. While there are many types of non-binary gender, some are more commonly discussed than others. These include:

  • Agender: Having no specific gender identity or having a gender identity that is neutral. Sometimes used interchangeably with gender neutral or gender-less.
  • Bi-gender: Having two distinct gender identities or expressions, either simultaneously, at different times, or in different situations.
  • Gender-fluid: Moving between two or more gender identities or expressions.
  • Non-Binary: The umbrella term covering all gender identities and expressions outside the gender binary.

Pronouns and Titles
People who identity as non-binary may use a gender-neutral pronoun: they and a gender-neutral title: Mx.

Here's hoping that all airline companies add gender-neutral titles so that non-binary persons have a better flying experience.

Jeet
