We did it! Thank you to all the supporters of Make Us Visible Florida. After 2 years, our bill is now law. AAPI history is required in K-12 instruction and will go into effect July 1, 2023. However, we still have a long road ahead in curriculum implementation which can take 3-5 years! This is a huge win for the AAPI community. The AAPI community has combating racism, discrimination and the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes. The Atlanta Spa Shooting was the catalyst for me taking on this legislation. Education is the solution to prevent these issues. This is a unifying bill that has brought diverse communities together from community organizations to volunteers. We had 75 bi-partisan co sponsors from Florida, across religions, and races, and ethnicities. This is why our initial stand-alone bill passed the House with unanimous support and why we went through every committee in the House and Senate unanimously. We’ve had support across Florida from all communities of various backgrounds and we are so grateful. Florida students in grades K-12 will benefit from this legislation because all histories will be taught together. By including AAPI history in K-12 education, alongside the current required curriculum of African American history, Holocaust education and Hispanic contributions, we are all elevated. Our histories are intertwined and cannot be told without one another.   Progress isn’t made in a day, it’s incremental. It happens one step at a time. After extraordinary efforts by Make Us Visible Florida and bipartisan legislators, the bill language was amended to an omnibus education bill. This is a huge step forward. Looking ahead, MUVFL will continue to work together across our communities to ensure all FL K-12 schools and districts have access to curriculum that reflect all our communities and contributions.
