On Saturday, October 1, 2022, Make Us Visible Florida hosted a community dialogue on the importance of including the historic, civic contributions of Asian Americans to our country and the state of Florida. We heard from parents, students, teachers, small business owners, elected officials, and our neighbors about this important community issue.
More than 30 Asian American community organizations from across South Florida sponsored the event, which was attended by a bipartisan group of elected officials and their offices, including multiple Commissioners, legislators, and school board members. Community leaders and coalition members from across the state were in attendance, including Asian Americans from Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Seminole, Orange, Volusia and Hillsborough counties.
It was pretty epic when the bus from Orlando and carpool from Tampa arrived! The event kicked off with a traditional Lion Dance celebration and I was so proud of my Wah Lum Temple JR team who demonstrated kung fu after jumping off a long bus ride.
Despite the hurricane there was a great turn out and we were very grateful to the community for sharing their stories and showing support. We hope that those affected by the hurricane are on their way to recovery soon.
Our next steps will be to continue to reach out to legislators and let them know how important this issue is to us. If you live in Florida, please drop your legislator an email to let them know.
