Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) had published Draft Development Plan of Navi Mumbai City in August 2022 but suddenly major changes have been proposed by NMMC in the Draft Development Plan and these changes have been published in Govt. gazette on 23rd February 2024. We are deeply concerned and anguished at the changes proposed by NMMC in the development plan and observe that the changes proposed, if allowed, will result in existing water bodies and mangroves areas diverted by reclamation for residential and other uses. Instead of conserving and protecting this bio diversity green belt which is home to many resident species of birds and attracts migratory birds, the NMMC has proposed such changes which if allowed will lead to attempts by vested interests for illegal development and citizens taking recourse to legal remedies to enforce rules and regulation for preservation of environment and ecology. As a responsible government working in the interest of public and environment protection, we expect that the state government will not accept the changes proposed by NMMC and prevent the local citizens from approaching the judiciary for redressal.
