Description:
1. Out of an area of 35.55 hectares allotted for golf course & residential towers at Sector 60, Nerul, Navi Mumbai, nearly 33.45 hectares of the area falls under ‘wetland’ and is part of the National Wetland Inventory.
2. The Wetlands behind NRI complex & TS Chanakya, sector 60, Nerul, are part of NWIA and the same is to be protected, as per the directions of Hon'ble Supreme Court of October 2017 in the matter of Balakrishnan vs others, in accordance with Rule 4 of Wetland (Conservation and Management), 2010.
3.BNHS has recommended the wetlands to be preserved due to its biodiversity, rich habitat and to obviate future air accidents from bird hits at the Navi Mumbai Airport during take-off and landings.
4.Considering all these facts Shri Aaditya Thackeray , honorable Environment minister in a meeting held on 27th January 2020 has asked Urban development department & CIDCO to abandon the plan for Golf Course & Residential Towers in Sector 60 of Nerul & instead work on proposal for Flamingos sanctuary in it's place.
However we are yet to hear anything further from CIDCO MD after the meeting despite writing mails to him . He is also not responding to media . This has made us suspicious of his seriousness towards scrapping of golf course project .
