Environmentalists and officials of the Mangrove cell are rather upset with the BMC. Reason? Despite the Mangrove cell demolishing around 1,800 illegal structures months ago (between April to June), the BMC has not cleared debris from the sites, leaving restoration work in a limbo.
As per officials, most of the debris was dumped on wetlands and mangroves to fill up the plots and erect illegal structures. The rest of it are debris of the existing illegal structures that were razed by the authorities. Senior officials of the Mangrove Cell acknowledged the fact that as per the High Court order in 2005, BMC was supposed to ensure removal of the debris so that the encroached area could be restored. However, the civic body now claims there is no such mechanism in place.
