It's hard to believe that any once-great city could nosedive so steeply. We've had more planning bodies per sq ft than most, more politicians heading overseas to 'learn'. And yet there are no Achche Din; the 'Work in progress for a better tomorrow' has been on for half a century. And now the people in charge are arguing over the number of potholes and whether things are 'better' than they were last year. We have lost the charm that made Mumbai unique. Monstrous construction creeps with rapidity into our wetlands, saltpans and mangroves. The monsoon, once a pleasure, now feels like an assault. Look at the recent chaos and misery in Vasai-Virar and Nallasopara. It's unprecedented, and we can thank those who thought it was a good idea to monetise wetlands and build on every available open spaces. Read more below :
