

This past Saturday, April 9, a four-alarm fire broke out at the Port of Benicia pier, where petroleum coke (or "petcoke"), a toxic byproduct of Valero's oil refining, is loaded onto tankers to be shipped to Asia where it is burned as a cheap substitute for coal.. The wharf is less than 1,000 feet from the Arsenal National Register Historic District on Jefferson St, where high-density housing has been proposed between the ten Landmark structures. Clearly, placing well over 100 housing units there would endanger hundreds of residents. Contact City and County officials to express your concern that the Arsenal is simply too dangerous for massive housing development.
