Abderrahmane, an Algerian citizen with no problems, a quiet family man, has been imprisoned without proof for several months, his only fault is being the brother of a political opponent.
He is seriously ill and held in a squalid prison without any treatment.
He has committed no crime.
Abderrahmane Zitout is an Algerian citizen, 40 years old, married and father of 4 children aged 6, 9, 11 and 13 years old, living in the south of Algeria. He is a citizen without history, of great kindness and who participates in the associative life of his city. He does not belong to any political movement or party, his only fault is his relationship with the former diplomat Mohamed Larbi Zitout.
Abderrahmane was arrested at his home on March 30, 2022 and has been in temporary detention since then, with no prospect of release. He is accused of terrorist activities, of compromising the integrity of the homeland, of undermining public security and public order, and of receiving money with the aim of compromising the security of the state.
Since then, he and his lawyers have claimed his innocence and demanded evidence of the facts of which he is accused. To date, no evidence has been presented, and only the confession of the whistleblower, former military, Mohamed Azzouz Benhalima, himself accused of terrorism in this case, and his support of the Hirak movement, weighs against him.
All of his requests for release have been refused, as according to the authorities this would interfere with the investigation.
He concedes that he has only participated in the Hirak movement and "Liked" some messages on social media, as part of his freedom of expression, yet guaranteed by the Algerian constitution.
His health is very alarming and is deteriorating day by day.
He suffers from pathologies that have worsened since his detention started.
He has lost 15 kg in 3 months, he is very ill and receives no care. The conditions of detention and the psychological pressure are such that his health is threatened and his life is in danger.Without rapid intervention, he risks dying in prison, as it has unfortunately already happened in similar cases.
It is therefore urgent that the authorities realize that this is a mistake and that they must release him. Abderrahmane is not a criminal, and he does not belong in jail.
