According to a Gallup poll, Americans rate dysfunctional government as the top problem facing the United States. 86% of Americans believe the government is broken under the closed primary system.
In many states, due to closed primaries and partisan gerrymandering, less than 5% of voters decide who represents 100% of that district or state. Elected officials are forced to pander to narrow party bases at the expense of issues or positions with widespread support. This is not representative democracy. And, the American public has become so frustrated, a record 43% refuse to identify with either major party - a number that continues to grow.
The solution is simple: open up the primary process to include more people. Make it more democratic. Give people the freedom to vote for the candidates they want to vote for.
If we want elected officials who actually work for the American people, we need an election system that includes all of the American people.
