On Oct. 28, during the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s visit to Ottawa, Prime Minister Mark Carney and the UAE released a joint statement calling for an end to the “occupation” of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunb islands, three islands near the Strait of Hormuz that Iran took control of in 1971 and that the UAE claims.
Iranian-Canadians across the country have started petitions asking the Prime Minister to correct or retract that part of the statement. Many of their signers say they oppose Iran’s current government, but believe Canada should not take one side of a long-standing territorial dispute between two other countries, and should support a peaceful resolution under international law instead.
