Paul David Tonko is an American politician and engineer who has served as the U.S. Representative for New York's 20th congressional district since 2013. A dedicated member of the Democratic Party, Tonko is recognized as a staunch progressive. He initially represented New York's 21st congressional district from 2009 to 2013. With his career in public service beginning as a council member from 1976 to 1983, he later served as a member of the New York State Assembly from 1983 to 2007. Following the 2020 redistricting cycle, the 20th district now encompasses all of Albany, Saratoga, and Schenectady Counties, as well as part of Rensselaer County. Tonko's extensive experience in legislative roles underscores his commitment to progressive values and effective governance.
