The Issue

Too much history to lose.  Newcastle City Hall should be part of our City's cultural future.

UPDATE 31/01/13 - PETITION HAND-IN

We were a bit windswept, but it was the Council that were blown away when we gave them 13,000 signatures in support of Newcastle City Hall.

Those within range, can tune in to Tyne Tees TV's 'North East Tonight' at 6 pm this evening (31st January) for a full report.  A shorter report appeared on the lunchtime news, which can be viewed here: http://www.itv.com/news/tyne-tees/story/2013-01-31/save-the-city-hall-campaign/

Thanks to all who have signed and shared the petition, which remains open.  The petition will also be formally submitted to a full council meeting in the Council chamber next week.

With best wishes and fingers crossed for a positive future for Newcastle City Hall,

The Decision Makers

Newcastle City Council
Newcastle City Council
Nick Forbes, Leader of Newcastle City Council
Responded
I understand the anger at proposed cuts to much loved arts and cultural institutions across our city – and I regret the fact that we are being forced to consider such things. I value the role that culture has played in the renaissance of our city and I am loath to turn back the clock. That’s why we are working closely with cultural organisations to help them adjust to reduced levels of funding over the next three years. The City Hall is a marvellous Grade II listed building; it holds a special place in our hearts and we cherish it. Our ambition therefore is to seek the redevelopment of the whole Vine Street site, including City Pool, which will preserve the building for future generations. People should be in no doubt that City Hall will continue to act as one our most valued and historic venues for the foreseeable future while we try and secure a long-term sustainable solution for it. Most people in Newcastle and beyond are aghast at the pace and scale of the cuts that we face, and are making their anger known. I value your opinions on City Hall and our other proposals and they can make a genuine difference. To make yourself heard please visit www.letstalknewcastle.co.uk/budget2016 and have your say online. Every comment will be read, considered carefully, and fed into the decision making process. But let me remind you why we are being forced to take such tough decisions to balance the budget. Newcastle City Council receives the majority of its funding from central Government, so when they cut our budget we have to cut services. Over the next three years the Council’s budget will be cut by £90m – more than one third. We are losing the equivalent of £160 per person - but some councils in the south are losing less than £5 per head. This is blatantly unfair, and leaves us with some agonising decisions. There is no such thing as an “easy” cut. Nothing is pain free. If the Government simply gave us the average cut for local government, we would have £22m more next year alone – enough to save virtually all the services at risk, including City Hall. Regards Cllr Nick Forbes
